Indirect Tax Senior Manager

The Indirect Tax Senior Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with local and international VAT laws and regulations across EMEA & LATAM, optimizing indirect tax processes and systems, and providing strategic advice to leadership.
This role manages indirect tax matters across business operations, reduces risk, and identifies opportunities for business improvement in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment. You will work closely with the NetApp Finance and NetApp Tax and key business stakeholders to ensure accurate reporting (US GAAP and local statutory), robust controls, effective audit defense, and forward-looking planning that supports growth and working-capital objectives.
Job Requirements
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure accurate preparation, review, and timely submission of VAT returns, EC Sales Lists, Intrastat reports, and other related indirect tax filings across EMEA.
- Oversee tax technical analysis and accurate reporting for all EMEA indirect tax obligations; maintain strong documentation and reconciliations.
- Work closely with Group Tax and Finance to ensure complete and accurate indirect tax reporting for US GAAP and local statutory financial statements, including balance sheet substantiation and P&L impact.
- Manage external advisors to ensure accuracy of deliverables and timely filing of indirect tax returns.
- Establish and maintain period-end close procedures for VAT (accruals, reconciliations, journals, and flux analysis).
Advisory & Planning
- Provide proactive VAT guidance to leadership, finance, commercial, and operations teams on transactions, contracts, and new business initiatives.
- Assess VAT implications for cross-border and complex transactions and ensure correct VAT treatment.
- Work closely with NetApp’s e‑invoicing initiative ensuring VAT technical requirements are accurately defined, implemented, and compliant across impacted jurisdictions.
- Advise on VAT structuring to reduce liability, improve recoverability, and create efficient, scalable tax solutions aligned with business strategy.
- Partner with external advisors on special projects and planning initiatives.
Audit, Controversy & Stakeholder Management
- Lead audit defense activities across the region; manage tax authority queries, information requests, and dispute resolution to timely closure.
- Liaise with external auditors and advisors; coordinate with Group Tax and Finance leadership on positions, risk assessments, and outcomes.
- Prepare position papers, technical memos, and governance materials for leadership.
Process, Systems & Controls
- Develop and implement robust VAT compliance processes, policies, and internal controls; drive standardization and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with Group Finance, Tax and Operations to optimize ERP/tax engines and data flows for accurate VAT determination, reporting, and audit trail.
- Identify VAT savings, refunds, cash recoveries, and efficiency opportunities; track and report benefits.
Risk Management & Governance
- Proactively review business operations and transaction flows to mitigate VAT risks.
- Monitor regulatory developments; ensure company practices remain aligned with local and international VAT requirements.
- Address discrepancies, perform reconciliations, and maintain strong documentation to support filings and audits.
Forecasting & Working Capital
- Oversee and communicate EMEA indirect tax cash flow forecasting, highlighting VAT impact on working capital (e.g., payment timing, refund cycles, partial exemption, and bad debt relief where applicable).
Education
- 10 + years of experience in VAT/Indirect Tax within a multinational and/or Big 4 firm.
- People management experience (team leadership, coaching, performance management).
- Professional qualification required; CTA, ACA, ACCA, CPA (or equivalent).
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Law, or related field.
- Strong understanding of European VAT legislation and cross‑border transactions and effective understanding of global VAT/GST required.
- Demonstrated experience with VAT filings, planning, and controversy (audits/disputes) across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong tax technical and analytical skills; ability to interpret and apply complex VAT rules to real-world scenarios.
- Proven track record managing audits, defending positions, and resolving indirect tax issues.
- Proficiency with ERP systems and VAT reporting tools (e.g., Oracle Cloud); advanced MS Office skills.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) for interacting with tax authorities, advisors, auditors, and internal stakeholders.
- Highly organized with strong documentation discipline and the ability to manage multiple priorities across jurisdictions and deadlines.
